Rural Landscapes

By: Redazione CartApulia

This itinerary crosses the Apulian territory discovering the rural landscapes. We start from Gargano, where we can meet farms testifying the main agricultural and breeding activities. These ones took place in fortified buildings such as Masseria Palmieri in San Nicandro, Masseria di Posta di Torre Bianca and Masseria Castiglione in Lucera. In Bari, we visit Masseria Jesce in Altamura, an ancient farm near the via Appia, dating back to the 16th century. The importance of breeding and transhumance is proved by the great “Jazzo” of Masseria Pantano in Gravina di Puglia. We reach Masseria Lamafico in Polignano, a place used for agricultural activities. In the countryside of Monopoli, we come to Masseria Spina Grande, a complex with a defensive tower dating back to the 16th century, and then to Masseria La Cavallerizza, a milestone for horse breeding, since the Venetian domination (15th-16th century). Inland we find the complex of Masseria Badessa, built in stone and composed of the main building, the characteristic trulli and a large farmyard. Our journey ends in the extreme south of Apulia, where we find the underground oil mills of Palazzo Granafei in Sternatia that testify the importance of oil production and the Masseria Gelsorizzo, of Acquarica del Capo, the highest expression of a fortified farmhouse with a medieval tower.
