Medieval religious architecture

By: Redazione CartApulia

Our tour starts with the province of Foggia, observing the importance of pilgrimage routes during the Middle Ages: we visit St. Michael Sanctuary, which is linked to a series of religious complexes nearby, used as refuges for pilgrims from distant lands. These include the Abbey of San Leonardo in Lama Volara in Manfredonia. Proceeding towards Bari we find great examples of Romanesque architecture such as the Troia Cathedral, the Andria Cathedral and the Trani Cathedral, characterised by a rose window and the typical double and single lancet windows. The Basilica of Saint Nicholas in Bari houses the precious relics of the saint from Myra and exceptional works of medieval art. Over the centuries many churches have undergone numerous reconstructions, as for San Cataldo Cathedral in Taranto. Moving along the southern Adriatic coast we meet the Church of San Pietro Veterano or Tempietto di Seppannibale, dating back to the early Middle Ages, in the countryside of Fasano. In the convent of Santa Maria del Casale in Brindisi, the recurring theme of the Apocalypse stands out in the frescoes, and then as we move towards Lecce we come across the Abbey of Santa Maria di Cerrate, one of the most famous medieval sites in the area. Once in southern Salento we finally visit the Basilica of Saint Catherine of Alexandria in Galatina, with unique frescoes.
